What applications do you have open on your system right now. Just look at your task bar, and tell me what you have open. I’m interested to see what stuff people use on a daily basis.
My usual work setup is:
- Kmail – for work email
- Firefox – not just for wasting time mind you, see below
- Komodo Edit – for coding in PHP
- Few instances of Konsole – I have clever script that accesses our Employee Directory (a big excel sheet) on a mounted Windows share. (Yes, this stuff should be in a database or some groupware application but it isn’t and they like it that way. I lost that fight long ago. :P) I also have a script that accesses an encrypted password list that sits on my system.
- 1 or 2 Rdesktop sessions – connected to our WIMP server, and the File/Printer Server for monitoring them and etc
Almost every app sits on it’s own virtual desktop, so there is not much window juggling.
Within Firefox I usually have these tabs open:
- Google Reader
- My company’s issue tracking system
- Whatever website or application I’m currently working on
- Gmail notifier sitting in the status bar, letting me know if I got mail
- Adsense extension also in the status bar, showing me how much cash have I earned lately (not really crucial, but it’s rewarding to see the number creep up few cents every day)
What about you? What do you have open at the moment?
[tags]applications, kmail, komodo, rdesktop, google reader, twitter, gmail, opened aplications, running applications[/tags]
Firefox with too many tabs open. aMsn altho I’m hiding. lol. Liferea for rss. Notepad++ cause i just installed it yesterday in linux under wine…gotta test it ya know. haha. And a terminal that i’m not using now
Why do you need Notepad++ in Linux? There are tons of good editors out there that work natively without wine.
Kate comes to mind. I used to be very fond of Nedit when I used to work on an old Solaris box. And of course the graphical Vim (invoked by gvim I think).
Oh, I also have a terminal with BC open for quick calculations. :)
I have kate and the graphical Vim and more. I just install notepad++ for the hell of it and it is actually the first program I installed with wine. So i suppose it was me playing with wine more than anything.
And yeah I love BC too. had a dos clone of it for years, i got that code from the C now C++ users group.
Typically, I’ll have Opera, Firefox, IE, VIM, Pidgin, Eclipse, Outlook, and a few MS command prompts open. I’ll usually have several taps on Opera open to stuff like GMail, Google Reader, or various news sites. Firefox and IE are usually open for testing.
Always running: Firefox, Outlook, iTunes, mIRC, EditPad Pro, L33TSig, WhatPulse, WLM, Skype, Steam, and of course uTorrent to seed back those big ISOs of various Linux distros ;)
Running most of the time: Various PuTTY SSH sessions to my various servers, VNC to various other Windows PCs, and WinSCP/Filezilla for copying files to/from servers/pcs, Adobe Photoshop and/or Dreamweaver, MS Visual Studio 6 and/or 2005. Last but not least, MS Calculator :D
Btw, best calculator tool on windows is the Power Toy Calculator. It’s well done, behaves in a very intuitive way, and it is exactly what I need for 90% of my quick calculations. This is actually my favorite piece of software that was made by Microsoft. lol
Btw, Fr3d – are you in any way involved with L33TSig? Cause they have your name in the sample screenshot on their webpage. :mrgreen:
Also I usually disable Steam when I’m not playing. The only Steam game I currently own is HL2, and if I know I’ll be playing it, I just turn on steam ahead of time so it can download updates (if any). Since my machine is is not getting any faster, and all applications are getting blocked, I’m really picky to what I allow to run on startup.
yeah i agree Luke Power Toy Calculator is pretty nice and well done, esp for microsoft :wink: I doubt it works on win 2000 tho which is what i currently (seldom tho) use. I love calculators and calculator programs tho. Hmm kinda fond of RPN calculators tho i suppose from years of using HP’s line of calculators.
My Algorithms prof used to have one of the old HP calculators. He loved to “borrow” it to students for quick calculations and then watch them squirm.
Oh, and yeah – the power toys are XP only unfortunately. :( Which means that this awesome calculator probably didn’t make it into Vista, despite being 500 times better than that junk that ships with windows by default.
That’s hilarious luke, I like giving my HP 48 to people and watching them squirm too. lmao. and btw the I totally love the “mini” programming lang. the thing uses it’s cute as hell :)
And why Firefox is identified on your site as Mozilla 1.8.1.5 totally bumfuzzles me. hmmm. my user agent string is:
and general.useragent.extra.firefox in about:config is set to Firefox 2.0.0.5 Ubuntu Linux.
I updated firefox today and I was hoping that would somehow magically fix it. lmao
LOL. I guess the regexp is grabbing the first part of the user string, and completely missing the Firefox part. Go figure.
I’ll see if there is an updated version of the plugin out there.
Just has me confused Luke. haha. It started doing that about the same time I installed Mozilla here as well as installed the User agent switcher add on in firefox, but it is disabled… i seldom use it. Anyway most but not all of the sites online that claim to be able to identify browsers identify it correctly as firefox. But my yahoo tells me it is not as well as tagworld, an annoying ass message from both of them as it is really firefox and yep both sites work in it. Go figure is what i say too, haha
Firefox, Mail, iChat, BBEdit, Photoshop, iTunes, Transmit
TextEdit and Preview are also open mainly because I’ll use them every once in a while and never close them.
My list,
Firefox, KMail, Akregator, Ktorrent, Superkaramba, Beryl, The Gimp
My list at work:
-Always: Adobe Flex Builder, Firefox, Outlook
-Mostly: SQL Server Manager, Visual Source Safe, Service Capture (to see all http and xmlhttp requests), Flex data services (some data server for flex applications), Remote administrator, Remote desktop, different Explorer windows, Notepad++
Yes, I run it :mrgreen:
Having a multi-headed environment helps to keep more open . . .
SCREEN 1 (my work screen)
* Firefox
* about twenty xterms
* Sharity GUI (a commercial app to mount smb shares on my Solaris system)
* Rdesktp (connects to my headless XP system running on a SunPCI card
SCREEN 2 (my monitoring screen)
* Thunderbird
* Gkrellm
* Xmms
* GAIM (Pidgeon)
* Volume Control
XFCE PLUGINS (I have mini-apps running in my window manager)
* Xfcalendar
* XFClock
* Pager
* System Tray
Yes, I run it :mrgreen:
Hehe… Awesome. :)
Craid – I completely forgot about GKrellm. I also use it.
Btw, my home setup is this:
Firefox
Pidgin
Foobar 2000 (mp3 palyer)
Serious Samurize (like GKrellm for widndows)
PerfMonG (not always, but I do run it when I test it)
Cropper (for taking screenshots)
Daemon Tools (with few mounted images)
Then depending on what I’m working on one of these:
Eclipse (for Java)
MS Visual Studio (for C#)
Komodo Edit (for Perl and PHP)
I also sometimes have Thunderbird open, but lately I’ve been using webmail more and more for my personal email. It’s convenient because I can check it from any of my machines.
Programs with their own windows: Firefox, Kontact (including BasKet!), Quanta Plus, Nvu (was playing with something, rarely use it), Inkscape (future comic?), Kopete, and Skype.
Ready to access: YaKuake, SuperKaramba, and Katapult
In Yakuake: irssi, screen, and nano at the moment.
Minimized to tray, some with KDocker: KTorrent and Songbird
There’s also Apache for tesing PHP scripts. I guess that’s about it. :)
Inside Firefox though, there is a lot… Google Reader, WordPress Admin Panel, Modem Page (restarting ADSL connection frequently), three tabs for a blog post in progress, a message board, Explorer Destroyer, a screenshot I was sending someone of something in Nvu, and a post on Google Operating system.
I love Yakuake and Katapult. Completely forgot about them. :)
