Why Switch? You can use both!

Dear Internet,

Operating system is not a religion. You can have more than one. Everywhere I go I keep reading this pointless drivel about “switching” to Apple, migrating to Linux and etc.. I don’t get it. Is there some rule that says that when you buy a Mac you need to wipe your hard drive turn in your Windows CD’s? Hell, I have been using Linux and Unix for years, but somehow no one revoked my Windows XP license keys. Maybe I just got lucky and they forgot?

This might have been a concern few years ago, but today we live in the age of cheep electronics. You can buy an entry level Dell or a MacMini for $500 – which is about as much as you would probably expect to pay for a semi-decent sound system, or a good DVD player.

All modern operating systems will play nice with each other over network, and there is just no reason why you shouldn’t have Windows, Linux and Apple living on the same LAN. Not even mentioning that you can double or triple boot your system, or use virtualization tools such as Parallels or VMWare to run an OS on top of another. There is just no good reason not to use more than one OS at the same time.

There is no perfect OS. All of them have flaws, and all of them have awesome features. In fact they all complement each other nicely. All this bickering over whose OS is better makes about as much sense as arguing who has a bigger penis. It makes no difference whatsoever to anyone (except maybe your girlfriend), doesn’t solve any problems, and makes everyone involved looks stupid.

I said it before and I’ll say it again. Limiting yourself to a single operating system is silly because they all have different things to offer.
